39 Ways to Live, and Not Merely Exist

I came across a really cool article on Digg today called 39 Ways to Live, and Not Merely Exist. After reading the entire list, I couldn't help but realize how much of my life is spent in front of a computer screen. I've started to become aware of the radiation I'm soaking in and can actually feel the negative effects it's having on my body. It certainly doesn't help that my work requires me to sit in front of the screen 8+ hours a day.

I've already accomplished #9 on the list, turn off the TV. I do not have a TV even hooked up in my apartment, so I never watch it. I find that by simply making something unavailable, we automatically avoid it. I don't have salt or sugar in my kitchen. I don't see any use for them. If I had them there, I'd look for any reason to use them while cooking. By keeping a bottle of water on my desk at work, I constantly drink more water throughout the day. If I had to get up and walk somewhere to get the bottle, I'd drink a lot less water.

I really like creating routines (but strangely, I hate living a routine life). I find a routine to be the best and most simple way to form new habits (or get rid of bad ones). Create a morning ritual (#4), watch sunsets daily (#30), and try something new every week (#38) are all things I'd like to start doing. Taking mini-retirements (#27) is something I've always wanted to do and I'm working towards that goal. I hope to be there within the next few years.

  1. I like that article. It feels like I have most of it checked, but there are they few that put me into mere exist, like #8, #10, and #17. Kiss in the rain? Are they sure that’s something we can’t live without?

And getting outside everyday… well there’s the 6-18 mile hikes.. sarcastically checking #2. =)

  2. Nice article, may have to read over it again and try a few of them except:

“Walk outside bare footed. Find nature.” Yep, I can see it now walking barefoot outside and stepping in dog poop. lol

I’ve taken a 2 week break from wolf. But filled it with Need For Speed. I’ve talked about getting away from a few websites and only keeping a few, but everytime I think about it, the clients talk me into keeping on (except one of them failed 😀 ).

  3. Yea, I really doubt #17 is something we can’t live without. In my opinion, #3, #19, #35, #37 can also be lived without.

Walking barefoot is awesome. I used to walk barefoot all day when I was younger. Now the only time my feet are not covered with something is for a few hours each night.

I’ve been thinking, I should start some kind of rule where the only place I can use a computer is at work and for 2 hours at home. That way when I’m at home I’ll make sure everything I need to do on the computer is done before I start using it for recreational things. I can see that being a very hard rule for me to keep though…

  4. #17 isn’t that bad, except for going out in the rain or picking wildflowers… unless it’s picking them at a store.

#37 – me make food, hahahaha, tho a DeBrands Ice Cream Sundae doesn’t sound to bad right now. 2 softball size scoops with their chocolate and raspberry on top. yummm, What’s #17 again?

Oh…. 17. You 2 kids, stop your bickering and embrace and give each other a kiss.

  5. The thought of DeBrands Chocolate made me forget. It you liked sweets, you too would forget if your mind was set to DeBrands. 😀
