On my way up North on Saturday, I stopped at an Army Surplus store in Milford, NH to see if I could find a decent survival knife. My old knife had a cheap stainless steel blade that broke apart last weekend while I was using it to start a fire with the magnesium fire starter. I found a nice fixed-blade Air Force survival knife with a heavy base that doubles as a hammer. It came with a sheath and a sharpening stone.
The weather was much colder than it was when I went camping last week, although a lot of the ice along the river had melted (compare the pictures of the ice from last week, to the pictures from this week). It was also a lot more windy, with frequent gusts of 25-30mph.
On Sunday morning, while it was still partially sunny and the wind was blowing, it started snowing heavily. It was very surreal (and very cold). Overall a great trip and a great way to spend my 27th birthday. Thank you to all who wished me a happy birthday. To everyone I'd like to say: Happy Everyday!
I use to have a survival knife… purchased a long time ago back in Elementary School. It had tons of useful stuff in the handle and only cost me $5.00. 😆
Happy Belated Birthday!
Thanks DJT. 🙂
Yeah, this knife is heavy and very, very durable. Plus it cost me 10x as much as yours!
YEAH… But your knife prolly doesn’t have a fishing line, sewing kit, rain pouch, matches, compass in handle with a plastic sheath and a sharpening stone. Part of the blade was part saw . 😛 Think it was dubbed the Rambo Survival Knife. All the kids in town had one that year.
Wonder whatever happen to that knife? Haven’t seen it since around 1988 🙁
Haha yeah, it definitely doesn’t have all that stuff (I keep all that in my survival pouch). But this new knife does have a saw-like thing on the top (it’s hard to see in the picture). I’ve always wondered what purpose it serves, because it’s definitely not sharp enough to saw anything.
Hey Ramm hope you made it home Ok..
use to go camping in the winter.. BRR. I really don’t miss it..
Hey Aunt Sharon!
Yes, I made it home OK. It was definitely cold up there, but that’s part of the challenge and I loved it! 🙂
Hey Raam, just catching up with your blog, sorry if you said it somewhere – do you go by yourself?
I usually go by myself, yes. Sometimes my dad or my brother-in-law goes with me.
That’s excellent… a la Survivorman. Hope you bring a harmonica 🙂
I do bring a harmonica… but sadly I don’t know how to use it and I get bored of myself after a few minutes of randomness. 😉 I need to buy a small book and spend some time learning while I’m up there.
