StatHound.com bug gives away free stats

I discovered a bug in StatHound that allows you to get full featured access for any domain on your account, so long as you're paying for at least one domain. How? I’ll explain in a moment, but first, a little about StatHound.

I use StatHound.com to monitor this, and several other websites. It's an awesome tool, with ton's of useful information. Beautiful graphs to see exactly how many visitors have visited your site (both regular and unique hits), entry pages, IP addresses, Time Zones of the visitors, and even their screen resolutions and type of browser they're using! There is a tiny snippet of code that needs to be placed on the entry page to your site. This snippet of code sends information to StatHound about the person visiting your site, which is then stored in a database.

The free version of StatHound only gives you access to view Summary and Hits, and only for the current Hour or the current Day. You can also choose to view unique or all hits. Obviously the huge limitation to the free account is that you can only view the current Hour and Day's stats. That's not very useful, unless maybe you’re lucky enough to get a few thousand hits a day.

The cheapest plan that gives access to all the features is $1.99 per month. A small price for the usefulness of this tool. I added a couple of domains to my StatHound account, however I only purchased the packaged plan for two of my domains.

OK, so how do you get free stats for your domain without paying the $1.99 for each one? Well, you need to purchase a plan for at least one domain. Once that is done, select the domain you chose to subscribe to the $1.99 plan and select whatever options you want on the left. Then choose a different domain from the domain list (one that you're not paying for). Although the options on the left will be grayed out, you'll still see the results for the selection of options you selected on the paying domain!

I can't guarantee how long this bug will last, but feel free to try it out. I'm not willing to spend another $1.99 on a new account to confirm this works on new accounts, so I can't even guarantee it can be replicated. But, if you're already a StatHound.com user, and you're already paying for a domain, try it out!

  1. I’ll have to at least try stathound. I currently use the free version of statcounter.com. Raam if you want to see how it works or what it does, email me and I’ll give you a username and password.

  2. statcounter.com looks good, but after playing around with the demo for a few minutes, it feels a bit crowded. Maybe I’m just so used to the layout and feel of StatHound.

The site does look more “polished” than StatHound and I noticed a bunch of features that StatHound doesn’t have (such as Configurable Counter and Email Reporting). But for the price difference ($9 per month vs $2), I believe StatHound is a better deal. 🙂
