Starting a weekend detox fast

While using my laptop at a local veggie cafe, I overheard someone talking about doing an intestinal detoxification by fasting for a day or two and only eating a little bit of rice if necessary. I've decided to try it for the weekend. As of 9PM Friday evening, I will not eat anything, except possibly some plain brown rice, until 9PM Sunday. (The last time I tried fasting, I didn't last more than 20 hours, so lets see how far I get this time.)

  1. after all the times you mocked me for it.

I cant believe you'd do it on a whim after overhearing something in a cafe.

there are many different type of fasts, the idea of the one your speaking of is to eat a single simple food which is easy for your body to digest so that it can regenerate.

if your gonna do a rice fast stick to either white or brown basmati and don't waver because all other rices particularly traditional brown is more difficult to digest.

  2. I don't recall ever "mocking" you for fasting… I know fasting has tons of health benefits. The only time I wouldn't have considered fasting in the past was when I was in the middle of a workout routine. I may have told you fasting was a bad idea while doing a stressful activity (like lifting or running).

What's the longest you've fasted for?

  3. 3 or 4 days. I never developed hunger but the tough part was eating without paying attention because its tough to stop such a natural habit… its kinda like smoking if you stop smoking after having a pack a day for a few years the habit of picking up the ciggerette holding it your mouth and lighting gets to you before the actual chemical addiction.

many peoples experiences differ though. some people are the opposite.

if you can actually not think about eating for a few days and avoid the habit of making food jump in your mouth then you'll be fine. especially on a rice fast there isn't anything difficult about that you just have to be disciplined not to eat other foods.

  4. I'm not worried about eating. I have no problem controlling what I eat and when. It's feeling sick that gets me. I hate feeling sick and forcing myself to do something that is obviously making me feel sick is difficult. The last time I tried fasting I felt so sick after 20 hours that I gave up. (And I'm not just talking about the hunger feeling. I'm talking about headaches, nausea, muscle pains, etc.) That's why this time I'm going to try it with just eating some brown rice.

  5. well not everyone's body is suited for fasting i guess. with that sensitivity you may be highly prone diabetes. thats the only reason i can think you would become that way.

  6. All the more reason to fast! I don't believe in things being left up to genetics, including diabetes. I'm aware that I have a high carbohydrate sensitivity, so that probably explains a lot of it.

It's been more than 24 hours and I actually don't feel so bad. I had some herbal tea and a little brown rice, and besides the hunger, all I have is a slight headache. Let's see how tomorrow goes.

  7. I actually had not heard of scurvy until you mentioned it, but immunodeficiency can be a serious problem for anyone fasting. We live in a time of abundance and long periods without food are rare, so our bodies are much more fragile to sudden changes.

I don’t know if you were fasting for weight-loss or for some other reason, but from my personal experience (I used to weigh 230lbs) the best way to lose weight is to actually eat more often, not less (eating less often causes your body to go into starvation-mode and causes it to conserve as much as possible). Of course, what you eat is more important than how much you eat.
