Mac OS X Leopard: Grammar Check

After upgrading to Leopard, I noticed something different while typing a message in Adium:

Grammar Checking in Leopard

The tooltip was rather humorous and it caught me by surprise. I never realized grammar checking wasn't there until I upgraded to Leopard. I opened TextEdit and confirmed that it also has a grammar check option. Cool!

Leopard includes a ton of new features but I haven't even bothered to look over the list of 300 new features on Apple's website until now. Included in the list is the global grammar checking (assuming the app makes use of it):

Grammar Check
Let your grammar set a shining example. A built-in English language grammar checker helps ensure that you don’t make errors in grammar.

  1. Global grammar checking is turned on by default in Leopard, however the application you’re using must be new enough to make use of that feature.

  2. Hi,

I’m using Mail.app for my emails at work and my boss has complained to me saying that i don’t get capital “I”‘s and such when simply typing. Does this Global Grammar checking thing work in Mail as well?

    I’m running OS X 10.5.5, Mail 3.5.

    Any help appreciated.

  3. Hi Dan,

I’m running the same version OS X and Mail.app as you are and I can confirm that both spelling and grammar is supported.

To make sure messages are checked for both spelling AND grammar, do this:

    1. Open Mail.app
    2. Compose a new message
    3. Choose Edit -> Spelling and Grammar -> Check Grammar with Spelling

Now whenever you compose or reply to a message, your message will be checked for both spelling and grammar as you type, including any uncapitalized i’s (which will be underlined with a green line to indicate a grammar problem).

    I hope this helps!

  4. Thank you! I just switched from Outlook to Mail and I was appalled at how poor my messages were turning out without grammar check.
