Completed: 16.6% of my Life

If there's anything I've learned the older I've become, it's to never claim to know what the you of the future (even 1 year in the future) will say, do, think, or believe. I didn't expect or anticipate a single thing that's happen to me in the past two years and I have no idea, and refuse to make any assumptions of, where I will be in three, six, or even twelve months from now.

It's liberating to let go of all expectation and to live life as it comes at you—with a plan yes, but one that is pliable; one that you will allow to adjust and change on the fly.

It makes you feel invincible, as if each and every day is an entire lifetime, and that you have nothing to worry about besides what happens today.

What is age anyway? It's a number which we have created to define time—to catalog our existence on Earth. For that matter, if I lived on any other planet in this solar system, my age would not be 25 today.

Planet
My Age
Mercury
103.81
Venus
40.64
Earth
25.00
Mars
13.29
Jupiter
2.11
Saturn
0.85
Uranus
0.297
Neptune
0.152
Pluto
0.101

If my age can fluctuate so much just by the planet I reside on, then what age would I be living on other planets in other solar systems? The bottom line is, we create and define age. It's a measurement of time which has been globally accepted (I won't say universally accepted, because I highly doubt other universe's have agreed to anything). I talked more about time in a previous post, Timeless Living.

The human mind is a very powerful thing—so powerful in fact that I believe we assist nature in making us old by reminding ourselves of our age. We have this preconceived idea of how old we're expected to live—how many people truly believe, and I mean as much as they believe they will die without air, that they will live to 150 years old?

I don't tell myself I've turned 25. I tell myself I have turned 16.6. I cannot escape the usage of date and time during my day-to-day living and I cannot change what everyone has agreed upon as a measurement of time. So instead I've decided to change what I believe my age is: I'm only 16.6% through my life. When I die, and reach 100% of my worldly existence, I will be 150 years old.

Vegan's get Plenty of Calories!

These are pictures from my FitDay account. I decided to start keeping track of everything I eat to see how I'm doing with calories and to see if my fat/carbs/protein ratios are good. I didn't realize I was eating so many calories!

As you can see by the Calories Burned picture, I'm consuming about the same number of calories as I burn on a daily basis, excluding any calories I burn from workouts. This explains a lot about why I haven't been burning as much fat as I thought I was -- I've been eating too much! The strange thing is that I've been feeling hungry non-stop, especially at night.

Those pictures are from yesterday. Today I've changed my diet to adjust the ratios and I'm aiming for around 2500 calories.

I also spent 20 minutes today, climbing a total of 948 steps (56 stories (14 stories x 4)) in my office building. It was an amazing workout! Anyone who uses work as an excuse for not being able to workout simply isn't creative and motivated enough! When I worked 3rd shift as a help desk analyst at Getronics a few years ago, I ran laps around the parking lot at 2:00am!

EDIT: I ended up eating more calories today than I did yesterday, however that is because in addition to spending 20 minutes doing the stair climbing I did 30 minutes of interval training at my parents house this evening, which burned 500 calories. So technically, I only consumed 2350 calories.

Truck Towed due to Street Cleaning

OK, I can read signs just fine. The sign said "Street Cleaning - Second Wednesday of Every Month". What's today? The second Tuesday of the month. Apparently, I'm supposed to magically know that the second Tuesday of every month is when they clean the "odd side" of the street (the side everyone normally parks on); the second Wednesday is for the "even" side of the street.

I knew something was wrong when I noticed no cars parked on side of the street where I usually park. Sure enough, my truck was gone. I called the Cambridge City Clerk, who transferred me to the non-emergency police department, who then told me to call B&B Towing. When I called they explained that it will be $75 cash -- a truck ripped the phone line off their building a few days ago and they're still waiting to get their phones working before they can take credit cards. I jotted down their address and proceeded to Google Maps. The place was 3.2 miles from my apartment -- a bit further than I was willing to walk (I had to get to work). I knew I should have brought my bike to Cambridge this week instead of leaving it in Lowell!

I called a cab. Ten minutes later he arrived. He didn't seem to know the area very well for a cab driver. After fifteen minutes I arrived at 50 Mooney ST; an industrial area with big trucks, backhoes, and lots of dust flying around. The fare was $12.75 -- there were no credit cards accepted and I only had $11 cash on me. I told the cabby I needed to stop at an ATM, but he insisted on just taking the $11 and dropping me off. After he left, I realized I needed to go to the ATM anyway -- to get money to pay the towing company! I walked in the direction I thought I would find an ATM -- 1/2 a mile later I came across a Bank of America branch. I took out $100 cash and walked back to 50 Mooney ST.

After paying the towing company, I got in my truck -- ah! Whats that on my window? Oh, a ticket: $20 fine for parking on the street during street cleaning. This whole event cost me 1.5 hours and $106. How lovely. Tomorrow is the second Wednesday of the month. Everyone seems to have parked where they normally park on the street. I left my truck in my office parking lot and walked 1/2 a mile to my apartment. I'm not taking any chances. I set up a reoccurring event on my Blackberry to remind me each month before the street cleaning days.

Time to Burn the Fat

I know I've been saying this for weeks, but tomorrow I'm going to start counting the calories I eat. I've already started using my rowing machine regularly, now I just need to increase the amount of time I use it for. I love running, but when I do too much of it I get shin splints or my knees start to ache. I also need to work on my unsightly calves -- they're probably the most undeveloped area of my body.

Appetite is controlled by your brain and its absolutely amazing how strong feelings of hunger can be. The past few weeks I've found myself constantly feeling hungry, even when I feel full and my stomach hurts. I'm not sure if its because of the change in my diet or if it's because I'm not doing enough intense physical exercise.

The maximum amount of fat a person can safely loose per week is 2 LBS; by burning ~500 calories per day. I aim to burn at least 1.5 LBS of fat per week, for the next 12 weeks (18 LBS of fat!)

Wow, that is so much easier said than done.

Added New Archived Posts

I found a bunch of posts, nine months worth actually, and added them to the archives -- August 2002 through May 2003. It's pretty interesting how I've changed since then, how my writing has changed, how what I've written about has changed.

I used to use the date of the post as the subject, so that's why all the posts don't have any nice descriptions. It's hard enough to come up with subjects for new posts, so there is no way I'm going to think up post titles for all those archived posts!

Mountains Created by the Rain

I found a couple of pictures, taken back in 2005, of awesome tiny mountain formations created by a heavy rainstorm.

I was digging out the dirt from my basement when all of a sudden it started pouring -- so I went inside. When the rain stopped and I went back to continue working, I noticed these tiny mountains in the pile. Upon closer inspection I was amazed at what I saw:

Normally the rain would have just washed away the sand, but because the pile was underneath a big tree, and the leaves from the tree slowed down the rain, the water dropped straight down on top of the pile. A lot of sand was washed away, but some tiny stones shielded the sand underneath them.

It has to be the most incredible form of art, created by nature, that I have ever photographed. The pictures still amaze me. Check out the full gallery of images, including some nice pictures of Pawtucket Falls (on the Merrimack River) in Lowell. The waterfall was unusually high due to the large amounts of rain we had that week.

Vacant Cumberland RD Units Listed on Craigslist

I've listed both of my remaining vacant units on Craigslist. This is the first time I've used Craigslist to place an AD and I'm excited to see how well it works, especially considering it's free. Craigslist is where I found my current job. If I don't get any good response from the ADs within two weeks, I'll have to spend $130 per listing and place an AD in the local newspaper.

Here are the two ADs:

The Business Trip to Pittsburgh, PA

The trip went well, except for a few minor delays. Our plane in Boston was delayed and even though we arrived at the airport around 6pm, we didn't leave Boston until around 9pm. When we arrived in PA we had to take a taxi to the hotel -- which was 45 minutes away. The taxi charge was $75! By the time we got into the hotel it was already 11pm.

The Ericsson building was awesome -- designed to look like one of the high tech buildings in Southern California. I've searched the web for awhile, but been unable to come up with any pictures of the place, sorry. The weather, was incredible; sunny and 75+ degrees with a light warm breeze. I only felt the warmth of the outdoors for about 15 seconds while walking to the car, but it was beautiful! It was 33 degrees and rainy when we arrived back in Boston.

I read about 70 pages of The Martian Chronicles while I was on the plane and so far it's an awesome book. This week I'm going to do my best to read at least 1 hour every day and I'm also going to ramp up my cardio. I'm not seeing enough results with the pace I'm going at now -- and it's already April!

Weekend Recap

As usual, the weekend didn't go as planned. Something came up Friday night and I decided to get the stuff on Saturday instead. I woke up late on Saturday morning and missed the appointment at the Chevy dealership for the safety recall. I ended up spending the majority of Saturday driving to different hardware stores, returning stuff for my Dad, and buying stuff for Ware ST.

I worked all day on Sunday installing everything in Ware ST. I started around 10am and didn't finish until 7pm. I kept finding things that were broken or needed replacement. I must have run to the local hardware store half a dozen times. I took before pictures, but forgot to take the after pictures... 😐

Last week
, I mentioned that I was going to start reading and rowing everyday. I've been doing a lot more rowing, even though it does feel rather uncomfortable (probably something to do with the misaligned posture of my spine). Reading, however, I have not been doing a lot of. I'm bringing The Martian Chronicles with me tonight on my business trip to Pennsylvania -- hopefully I can finish at least half of it before I get back. 🙂

It's going to be a long weekend

Today I have a dentist appointment at 4:20pm, then I have to go buy the kitchen cabinet, countertop, sink, and faucet for Ware ST.

Tomorrow morning I'll be dropping off my truck at the Chevy dealership to have something fixed for a safety recall (its free). Then I have to install the kitchen cabinet, cut the hole in the countertop for the sink, install the countertop, install the sink, install the faucet, and hook up the faucet. After that's done, assuming nothing goes wrong, I'll install the bathroom toilet. But before I install the toilet I have to replace the wax ring. Then I need to install and hook up the bathroom sink.

Sunday, assuming I get everything done at Ware ST, will be spent finishing up a programming project for work.

Monday evening I fly out of Boston for a business trip in PA.

Tuesday evening I fly back to Boston.

Wednesday evening, after work, I have an appointment to fix a server issue at one of my new clients here in Cambridge.

Yes, this is a typical week! I'll try to take some before/after pictures of the work I do at Ware ST and post them on Sunday. And because of all this stuff, my blog posts might be irregular over the next few days.

Where the hell did the preview button go in WordPress? After upgrading I can't seem to find the preview button when composing a post.

I took a sauna last night -- 30 minutes at 150+ degrees Fahrenheit. The last 10 minutes were pretty difficult and I struggled a few times to stay conscious. I wonder what the maximum temperature is that a human can survive in for 30 minutes. Anyone know?

Upgraded WordPress

Well, I took the plunge and upgraded my WordPress installation from 2.0.1 to version 2.1.2. I few weeks ago was going to do the upgrade to version 2.1.1, but I decided to wait a bit longer. Damn good thing I waited -- only four days later it was discovered that someone cracked the 2.1.1 WordPress files and allowed dangerous code to be executed.

Now it's been a few weeks since the updated version was released, so I feel comfortable about upgrading. During the upgrade process I forgot the step to disable all the plugins. When I copied the new files to my web server, my whole blog installation was screwed up. So, praying to god that the backups I made would work, I deleted everything and restored the backups.

Long story short, I eventually got everything working with the latest version of WordPress. I had to install a new plugin called RunPHP, so that I could get the SRG Clean Archives plugin working again. The entire blog feels a bit more responsive, which is always good.

Please let me know if you notice anything broken or anything that doesn't look right!

The Echo of a Alternative Path

I realized today, while watching a clip from the war in Iraq, that the past four years of my life could have taken a much different path. Four years ago, before I bought my first house, I had seriously considered joining the Marines -- serious enough that I had contacted a recruiter to ask questions (he called me every 6 months after that, up until last year, to ask if I was still interested in joining). No one knew how seriously I was considering it.

However, around that same time, my parents introduced me to an old friend of my Dad, Paul Brouillete. He is one of the top real estate agents for Century 21 in this area. After I bought my first house, he was nice enough to spend a lot of time talking to me about real estate investment and how to develop financial freedom. From that point, my whole life moved in a different direction -- I started doing computer consulting on my own, I bought two more houses, learned a lot more about plumbing, electrical, roofing, house framing, and many other things.

So, do I like the path my life has taken thus far? I won't say that I don't like it, but I can't help but wonder and imagine how things could be different right now. Would I be in Baghdad, Iraq instead of Cambridge, Massachusetts? Would I be sleeping in a tent in the middle of the desert with gun shots echoing in the distance, instead of dealing with leaky water pipes and worrying about waking up late for work in the morning? Would I be driving a humvee, praying I don't hit an IED, instead of trying to find a parking spot close to my apartment?

It hit me pretty hard when I was watching the video of soldiers in Iraq and I suddenly said to myself -- "Wow, that could've been me".

Life is a train which can easily, and probably does quite frequently, jump the tracks. Our paths are about as defined and predicable as ripples from a line drawn in the waves of a turbulent ocean.

Time to Start Counting Calories!

I really need to start counting calories. I feel that even though I am eating very healthy, I'm still consuming too many calories to loose fat. FitDay is really nice for doing this, but it takes time to measure out and weigh every single thing I eat throughout the day. I suppose if I pre-made all my meals this wouldn't be a problem.

I spent $75 less on food this week than I did last week -- not that I really had a choice. The bills are stacking up faster than I can count and I don't see any end in sight. It's pretty bad when you've already cut your expenses and you realize that the only way you're going to be able to break even is by making more money.

The Start of Two New Habits: Reading and Rowing

This week I'm going to start two new habits: reading and rowing. That's right, I'm going to set aside 1 hour every night for reading and at least 15 minutes every day for rowing. I will make sure I don't read the same thing two days in a row (i.e., not the same book/magazine). I've got plenty of reading material, as I am a subscriber to New Scientist (weekly) and National Geographic (monthly), both of which I never read in their entirety each month.

Although I frown upon reading fiction, simply because it feels like a waste of time, I decided to purchase The Martian Chronicles, a SciFi novel which is supposed to be one of the top 10 must read SciFi books. At the same time, I picked up The Pragmatic Programmer -- one of the top recommended books for programmers. I also have a book that I bought a few months ago called The Best Software Writing, volume 1. I've already read probably 25% of the book and there really is a lot of well written stuff in there.

So, why reading? Well I feel that the only way one can become a better writer is to read better writing.

Today I brought my mountain bike to Cambridge. Now that it's warm enough to ride, I'll start riding it to the office and to the gym in Somerville. I also brought my water rower from Lowell. My mom paid half for it a few years ago for my birthday. It hasn't seen very much use since then but I plan to change that. Here is a picture I took a few years ago after assembling it.

How to make drinking water a lot easier

Last year, I wrote a lengthly post about why its so necessary to drink more water. Drinking water isn't really a problem for me, its simply remembering to drink it.

I discovered that if you simply always have a bottle of water on your desk, or within reach of where you work, it will require nothing more than the thought "I could use some water" to grab your water bottle and drink some water (maybe even leave the cap off!). But if you have to get up and walk somewhere just to get some water, you're a lot less likely to do it.

I like to buy a single 1.5 liter Poland Spring bottle of water and simply make sure I refill it once during the day. That means I'll get at least 100oz of water per day. At the end of the week, I toss out the bottle and buy a new one (reusing the bottle too many times can eventually cause toxins in the plastic to release into the water).

A Healthy Week

Well this week has seen a couple of interesting changes. On Sunday, I went food shopping for this week and bought lots of fruits and veggies. And then on Monday, after discovering the Vegan Fitness Forums, I made the decision to go vegan -- which means no dairy, including whey protein. I already have a couple of tubs of soy, hemp, and rice protein so I've started using that to make protein shakes. Probably the easiest, and most tasty shake, that I make is done like this:

1 cup unsweetened soymilk
1 scoop of soy protein
1 banana
1 tbsp peanut butter
ice to taste

It's incredible! You don't taste the soy protein at all, but the whole thing contains over 35g of protein! And meat eaters wonder where we get our protein...

This week I was also given the additional task of being the QA Engineer for Aerva. It will be an excellent learning experience and it will help me gain a better understanding of the whole software development process.

I finished almost all of the fruits and veggies you saw in my fridge on Sunday, but I still have enough for this weekend. Usually I don't have easy access to a stove during the weekends and I end up eating at LifeAlive or snacking on nuts, but this weekend I'm going to make it a goal to finish everything left over from Sunday. I definitely bought too much food this week, but now that I have a good idea how much I'll need, I'm going to buy less for next week.

I also need to increase my protein intake, which I plan to do by consuming more soy protein shakes. I'm also going to buy wheat gluten, something I've never bought before, however I've learned it has the most amount of protein of all vegan foods.

My workouts have been going well, however I haven't been doing enough cardio. Starting next week, I'm going to get back on my HIIT workouts, two days a week. HIIT is extremely intense and I have had excellent results in the past using it. I actually wrote a post about it back in 2003. I'll probably start doing that same HIIT workout and then increase the intensity in two months.

The Model M Keyboard

I bought a couple of Model M keyboards on eBay a few years ago, however I haven't been using them simply because they are very loud! Now that I'm living in the basement, alone, in Cambridge, the loud noise isn't an issue. I actually like the fact that I can clearly hear an audible response for each and every key that I press. It also sounds pretty cool when I'm typing fast and all you hear is non-stop clicking. 🙂

My specific model is rather rare and hard to find -- one of the original keyboards, part number 1391401. I'm a huge fan of durable things so it's awesome to be typing on a keyboard that was made when computers, like the one I'm using right now, cost over $1,000,000 (if they even existed). How's that for cool!

Vegan Fitness Forum

I've been reading stuff on the Vegan Fitness forum lately. I found it somewhere in a post on the bodybuilding.com forums, which I also frequent. I'm learning a ton of stuff from the Vegan Fitness forums -- many of my questions related to bodybuilding on a vegan diet have been answered.

I bought two bags of raw seeds yesterday -- pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. Both are inexpensive and have a high protein content. However they're both high in fat, which means even though they're good fats, they still contain a ton of calories. If I eat enough pumpkin seeds to consume 20g of protein, I would have also consumed 40g of fat -- 448 calories! That's almost 1/4 of my daily caloric intake!

I also listed a new item on eBay yesterday; a broken Toshiba laptop I bought from someone for $35. Similar broken Toshiba laptops have sold for $90+, so hopefully I can make a little money off it.

Welcome new life to my desk

I realized how much I love the outdoors, and more specifically the rainforest. Breathing in the fresh scent of a forest or the smell of ripe tomato's on the vine, is absolutely the most relaxing thing for me. Ever since I was little, I've had a liking of deep, dark green colors -- specifically forest green. Since I moved to Boston, I've been realizing how much I miss nature.

I've started to wonder how much of an effect, mentally and physically, not being around trees and plants has on a person. Plants consume carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Humans consume oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Nature didn't make things that way by accident. When I walked into the plant isle in Home Depot yesterday, I was shocked. The air literally felt different, -- cleaner, healthier, easier to breathe. If simply walking into the isle produced that much of a noticeable difference, how much am I missing on a daily basis?

So I bought a plant, an ivy, or if you'd prefer the scientific name, a Hendera helix. I picked the ivy because it doesn't require a lot of light, which is good since I live in a basement which gets little light!

I don't know if a single plant will have that much of an impact, but it's a start!

Fruits and Veggies for a Week

I went food shopping today, at Whole Foods. It's not the cheapest place to shop, but they certainly have good stuff. I always shop for the current week, nothing more. By the end of the week everything in my fridge should be gone (besides peanut butter, jam, flax oil, etc).

The rest of my diet includes whole wheat bread, tempeh, brown rice, beans, whole wheat pasta, whole grain cereal, assorted nuts, and soy milk. My fruits I eat raw, and I usually steam veggies in the microwave (1 inch of water on the bottom of a bowl, add washed veggies and microwave for 5 min). Although I've been avoiding all dairy for the past few months, I've recently introduced whey protein back into my diet to help with my muscle gains.

This week I'm also trying something new, soy yogurt. I've read the live cultures in yogurt are really good for your digestive system and since I've been having odd digestion issues, I'm going to see how that helps.
